SURO FAQ's
What is matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is whisked directly into water or milk and consumed whole.
The result is a richer flavour, vibrant green colour, and a more concentrated tea experience.
Where does Suro Matcha come from?
Suro Matcha is grown, harvested, and stone-milled on a fourth-generation tea farm in Shizuoka, Japan.
Shizuoka is one of Japan's most respected tea-growing regions, known for producing high-quality matcha thanks to its climate, soil, and generations of farming expertise.
Is Suro Matcha Ceremonial Grade?
Yes. Our matcha is made from carefully selected first-harvest tea leaves and is crafted for everyday drinking, whether that's traditionally whisked, as a latte, iced, or however you like it.
How much matcha should I use?
We recommend 2g per serve, which is approximately half a teaspoon. You can use more if you prefer a stronger flavour, higher caffeine content, or a more vibrant green colour.
Does matcha contain caffeine?
Yes. A typical 2g serving of matcha contains approximately 50-70mg of caffeine. For comparison, a standard cup of coffee typically contains around 80-120mg of caffeine.
Many people find matcha provides a smoother, more sustained energy thanks to the naturally occurring amino acid L-theanine.
Will matcha replace my coffee?
It can. Many people switch to matcha because it provides caffeine with a different experience to coffee. Others simply enjoy both.
If you're looking for a smoother morning ritual or an afternoon pick-me-up, matcha is a great alternative.
What does matcha taste like?
Good matcha should be smooth, balanced, and naturally sweet. Our matcha has a creamy texture with subtle nutty notes and very little bitterness when prepared correctly.
Why does my matcha taste bitter?
The most common reason is using water that's too hot. We recommend using water between 70-80°C. Boiling water can scorch the matcha and create bitterness. Using too much powder or low-quality milk can also affect flavour.
How should I store my matcha?
To keep your matcha fresh:
- Store it in a cool, dry place.
- Keep the pouch or tin sealed when not in use.
- Avoid direct sunlight.
- Keep it away from strong odours.
For the best flavour and colour, we recommend consuming it within 1-2 months of opening.
Does matcha expire?
Yes. Unopened matcha has a long shelf life, but freshness is everything. Over time, matcha can lose its vibrant colour, aroma, and flavour.
Always check the best-before date on your packaging and consume soon after opening for the best experience.
Is Suro Matcha vegan?
Yes. Suro Matcha contains one ingredient only: 100% Japanese matcha.
Is Suro Matcha gluten free?
Yes. Pure matcha is naturally gluten free.
Does Suro Matcha contain sugar?
No. Our matcha contains no added sugar, sweeteners, flavours, fillers, or additives. Just 100% stone-milled Japanese green tea.
Is your matcha single origin?
Yes. Every batch comes from the same tea farm in Shizuoka, Japan. We don't blend tea from multiple farms or regions.
Can I drink matcha every day?
Absolutely. In Japan, matcha has been enjoyed daily for centuries. Many people incorporate it into their morning routine, pre-workout ritual, or afternoon break.
Why is your matcha so green?
The vibrant green colour comes from the way the tea plants are grown. Before harvest, the plants are shaded, which increases chlorophyll production and gives matcha its characteristic colour and flavour. No colours or additives are added.
How is Suro Matcha produced?
Our tea plants are shade-grown before harvest, carefully picked, processed into tencha, and then slowly stone-milled into a fine powder. This traditional process helps preserve flavour, aroma, and colour.
